In Australia the birds commonly seen in urban areas are often called ‘junk birds’. Like ubiquitous pigeons, these birds are found in almost every international city and dominate urban and natural environments. Here we are (2012) by Raquel Ormella features the Indian Myna bird (Acridotheres tristis), a species that was introduced to Australia from India in the early nineteenth-century to eat insects in the vegetable market gardens of the colony.

As a species the Myna can live on refuse and waste and prefers areas of isolated trees and grass, like suburban housing. For these reasons it has developed an entwined relationship with humans. Ormella’s video installation is constructed in parts, combining footage of living trees and human actors with animated birds and rubbish. All these discontinuous parts come together as a fractured whole and reflects on the experience of nature in modern cities.
